Devizes

Some Roman penates were found in Devizes, these are now in the British Museum. They are 3rd century, and show strong celtic influences.

The first growth came after the Norman invasion, when a castle was built to control the surrounding population. The town has grown on the site of the castle and has a shape that follows the curves of the inner and outer baileys.

The present castle is a Victorian replica and is not open to the public. The original was demolished after the civil war.

St John’s Church was built as the castle chapel and still has many Norman features.

The gravestone commemerates five young people who drowned on the sabbath in Drews Pond. Near the altar is a Green Man carving.

The coach trade increased the number of hotels and inns, including the Bear, childhood home of artist Thomas Lawrence.

A Millenium Cross in the churchyard shows local scenes.
